Nashville SC earned a point in a 0-0 draw against Penn FC on Tuesday. Here’s how the Speedway Soccer Pod team rated each member of the Boys in Gold.
Player ratings are 0-10 (10 being the best)
Players brought on in the 80th minute or later get a grade of N/A.
Manager – 4.5: While Gary Smith isn’t at fault for the awful finishing, some of his decisions were baffling. He played Shroot out of place on the wing ahead of Alan Winn, who’s been one of the few consistent goal threats. He brought on LaGrassa to replace Shroot, and left him out of place on the wing. He decided not to use his third substitution when Tucker Hume and Winn could have changed the game. Too slow to make changes and no real ideas to change the game.
Pickens – 6: Voted Nashville’s man of the match by the fans. Didn’t have a ton to do, only making two saves, but kept a clean sheet on the road.
Kimura – 6.5: The standout player on the backline. Involved in the attack, and made a few crucial interventions in his own penalty area. A strong candidate for man of the match.
Bourgeois – 6: A pretty average showing from him. Mostly strong in defense, but didn’t bring much of a threat from set pieces like he typically does.
Edgar – 6.5: A calming presence on the back line. Started a lot of Nashville’s best attacks with precise passing, and made some last minute interceptions to end Penn FC attacks. He looks to be a mainstay in this team.
Davis – 6: Again, solid. Involved more in the attack than Kimura, but his final ball wasn’t always there. Helped keep a clean sheet, and had another trademark slide tackle.
Shroot – 4.5: Out of position on the right wing. Was invisible for long stretches of the game, and wasn’t efficient with the ball when he had it. He lacks the pace to stretch the defense and wasn’t able to create any space. He missed an absolute sitter from a Taylor Washington cross in the 27th minute. 10/10 times that should be a tap in, and there’s really no excuse for not scoring there.
Reed – 6.5: Really the engine for this team. Especially in the second half, he drove forward with urgency and worked incredibly hard to make things happen. His final ball wasn’t always there, but the ideas were. Cracked a 25 yard shot in the 56th minute that went straight to the keeper. A yard or two to either side and it’s a goal of the week contender.
Akinyode – 6: As always, he’s safe with the ball. As always, would like to see him take a few more risks and be more inventive in the attack, but that’s probably not his role in the team. He gave away a lot of sloppy fouls in midfield that were really needless.
Washington – 6: A consistent threat down the left. Had a beautiful cross to Shroot that should have been a tap-in. Very involved in the second half, driving the ball at the defense, but his final ball into the box was lacking.
Moloto – 5.5: Created a few decent chances. Missed from 7 yards after Mensah flicked the ball to him. While it wasn’t as straightforward of a chance as Shroot had, it should have been a goal. Saw a yellow for a really bad tackle in the 43rd minute when he should have been sent off. Not a great night for him.
Mensah – 5.5: Supposed to be one of Nashville’s main goal threats, but didn’t manage a shot against his former side. Pretty invisible for long stretches of the game, and came off after 65 minutes.
Cox – 6: An upgrade. More involved than Mensah, and didn’t misplace a pass all evening. Had a decent half chance on a left-footed shot outside the box in the 78th minute, but put it straight at the keeper.
LaGrassa – 6: More involved than Shroot, and passed the ball forward well. Brought a lot of energy to Nashville’s final push for a goal.
